A local's guide

Things to do in Stratford‑upon‑Avon.

Stratford-upon-Avon is one of the loveliest small towns in England: Shakespeare's birthplace, world-class theatre, a gentle river and streets full of independents. We set up shop here because we fell for it, and we get asked all the time what to do with a day in town. So here's our short list, with a few of our favourite corners.

  • Follow the Shakespeare trail

Start where it all began. Shakespeare's Birthplace on Henley Street, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, and Hall's Croft tell the story of the town's most famous son. Even a wander past the timber-framed houses is worth the trip.

  • Catch a show at the RSC

The Royal Shakespeare Company and its Swan Theatre sit right on the riverside. Book a matinee, climb the tower for a view over the town, or just soak up the atmosphere by the stage door.

  • Walk the River Avon & Bancroft Gardens

The heart of Stratford. Watch the swans and narrowboats, cross the footbridge, take a short river cruise, or simply find a bench with something good to eat. It's the town at its most relaxed.

  • Visit Holy Trinity Church

The beautiful riverside church where Shakespeare was baptised and is buried. A quiet, lovely walk along the water from the centre of town.

  • Browse the independent shops

Sheep Street, Henley Street and the little courtyards off the high street are full of independents, from bookshops to homeware. Take your time and duck down the alleys, that's where the good ones hide.

  • Make a day of it with the family

The Stratford Butterfly Farm and the MAD Museum are firm favourites with kids, and the open green spaces by the river are made for an afternoon in the sun.

Where to eat & drink

Refuel at Mango Mood.

When you need a break from sightseeing, we're a short walk from the theatre and the river at 6 Shrieves Walk. Come for the town's favourite mango sticky rice, ceremonial matcha and proper speciality coffee, then take a box down to the water. It's the tropical corner of Stratford you didn't expect.
